Accessibility

The house wants everyone who writes to it, reads about it or visits it to be able to do so without difficulty, and would like to be told whenever someone cannot.

This website

The site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. It is tested with an automated checker at desktop and phone widths before every edition, and by hand with a keyboard and a screen reader. Every page works without JavaScript, except the certificate check and the forms’ in-page confirmation, which have written alternatives.

  • Every drawing has a text description, and the lettered keys to the drawings are set out in text beneath them.
  • Text can be enlarged to twice its size without loss of content.
  • Color is never the only means of conveying information. Registry statuses are given in words, and marked by a shape as well as a color.
  • The site respects a preference for reduced motion.

Known limitations

Some table headings on the Penfield registers page use the house’s own register numbering (for example V.8), which some screen readers read letter by letter. Transcriptions of certificates reproduce the original wording, which is sometimes old-fashioned.

Visiting the House

The entrance on Aske Place is step-free, as are the Salon, the Archive reading room and the ground-floor restrooms. The Atelier is reached by an elevator. The Owl may be seen at a seated height on request, and the attendant will describe it to visitors who cannot see it, and will guide the hand of any visitor who wishes to touch the Sleeping Hound. Assistance dogs are welcome everywhere except the feather room.

Telling us

If anything on the site or at the House is a barrier to you, write to house@rosenassociation.org. The house will reply within the week and fix what it can.
